In some ways, Savannah is the perfect gay nightlife destination - there are only a handful of gay bars, but each has a very different personality and scene, and together they make a great bar-hopping adventures. Of the bunch, Chuck's is what you might affectionately call Savannah's gay dive bar - it's a smoky, dark place with a great juke box, and it's set down along the waterfront, on a somewhat quiet stretch of otherwise touristy River Street. The crowd is mixed, more gay later in the evening. Page 9.
It's just a 20- to 25-minute drive to Tybee Island, Savannah's beach community, which generally feels distinctly more family-oriented and less gay-popular than the city itself. With that in mind, it's worth coming out here, especially on a warm day, to walk or lie on the beach, tour Fort Pulaski National Monument, or grab a bite to eat. There are several fine dining options here, including Sundae Cafe and the famously dive-y and fun Crab Shack. Page 63.

An offbeat, hip little wine bar that's popular with straights, gays, and everyone in between, Venus de Milo is along one of the main thoroughfares into downtown Savannah, close to City Market and a number of hotels and restaurants. As Boston is without any sex clubs or bathhouses, New England's top city for cruising and late-night fun is Providence, Rhode Island - it's home to a pair of gay bathhouses, Mega-Plex (pictured here) and Club Body Center. Providence is just an hour's drive south of Boston, so it tends to lure plenty of guys from there as well as in nearby cities like Hartford, Worcester, and even Cape Cod. Mega-Plex is the largest and most popular of the two, drawing a lively crowd around the clock. Page 12.

From 1958 until 1978, Club 82 was a beloved drag cabaret and glam-rock venue made famous by the likes of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Harvey Fierstein, Blondie, and the New York Dolls. It then became an indie-film theater, and in the early 1990s, the dark, underground (figuratively and literally - it's in a basement) space became a quite popular gay adult theater and sex club. More recently, it's been closed at different times, but it was spruced up at one point and now continues to be a gay sex club. Page 6.

Set in a semi-industrial but very safe and convenient neighborhood just off I-80, this clean and well-kept facility occupies a huge former warehouse and is outfitted with all the usual features you'd expect: gym, large hot tub, gay porn lounges, a maze of hallways, private rooms of different sizes, and lockers. Portenos take ice cream seriously, and there are plenty of noteworthy artisanal ice cream parlors around the city. Among the chains, Freddo is probably the most reliable - it's pictured here on a street corner in the charming and gay-popular San Telmo neighborhood. But there are countless branches all over town. Enjoy a dish of the rich dark-chocolate flavor, or a thick and delicious cafe con leche flavor that bears little resemblance to the ersatz versions you might find outside South America. Page 8.
In a city where the cultural scene is focused squarely on the performing and musical arts, it's worth noting that downtown Nashville has a superb visual arts venue, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway, 615-244-3340), which opened in 2001 inside the city's stunning downtown post office building. This beautifully restored art deco building is itself a work of art. The Frist hosts more than a dozen major traveling art shows and exhibitions throughout the year. Page 24.

Panama City Beach may be best known as one of the world's top hetero spring break destinations, but it's also home to one of the more popular gay beach bars (it's actually across the street from the sea), Splash. This festive spot isn't big, but there's a good size dance floor inside and an expansive covered, tropical-themed patio that extends out back. Splash has male dancers on weekends, drag shows, and rocking spring break parties during the student season (late February through early April). Page 37.

Set inside a beautifully restored art deco building from the late '30s that used to be a Greyhound bus office building and garage, Flex Cleveland is a virtual monument to gay bathhouse culture. The owners claim it's the world's largest such facility, and at more than 50,000 square feet, it's easy to believe this. Moreover, it's a clean, well-run, all-male 24-hour spa and cruise ground with a helpful and well-trained staff - you'd be hard-pressed (so to speak) to find a better bathhouse. Page 15.

Open until 11 on weekdays and midnight on weekends, the cheerfully decorated Koffee Klatch might as well be considered as one of Laguna Beach's best gay nightlife options - it draws a very mixed GLBT/straight crowd, the staff is fun and helpful, and there's usually a cool crowd in this place. It's also next to the town's gay bar, Bounce, and along a stretch of gay-popular businesses. With all this going for it, it's a great spot to meet and chat with locals, and there are decadent desserts here. Page 7.

Does Palm Springs have Gay Bathhouses and Saunas? Not exactly - you will find that many of the city's gay, clothing-optional men's resorts permit (or at least turn a blind eye to) sexual activity around the grounds. But in nearby Cathedral City, where laws and zoning are considered more lax, you will find the region's closest thing to a gay sex club, The Barracks, which is a cruising-encouraged fetish and leather bar and hangout will a hugely popular following. It takes a little effort to find it, but the gay beach on Treasure Island in greater St. Petersburg is one of the loveliest stretches of sand in the region. By far the most popular gay beach in Hawaii, and one of the most scenic and well-known in the world, Queen's Surf Beach is a relatively secluded stretch of sand in the heart of Waikiki, but along a section with no direct hotel frontage - this accounts for the fact there's more privacy and fewer families here than to the north or south. The beach here draws a mostly gay-male crowd, although certainly not exclusively so, as plenty of lesbians and straights seeking seclusion tan their hides here.

Sadly, the venerable neighborhood hangout Dick's Bar closed toward the end of 2007, after many years serving the East Village gay community. Another of Chelsea's rather garish sex-toy and porn stores, the Blue Store (206 8th Ave.) has garnered its share of bad press since it opened nearly a decade ago, first stirring the ire of neighbors who complained about its relentless blue-neon facade and the neighborhood's seeming excess of such establishments. Then a couple of years ago cops shuttered the place for following a prostitution sting. The store has cleaned up its act some and is now a great source of gay erotica, lube, and such. Page 17.

Las Vegas has both a gay gym-sex club, Hawks Gym, and - in the same rather bizarre and shopping center - a slightly more lavish bathhouse called Entourage. A fun, welcoming gay club in downtown Panama City, the Fiesta Room Lounge occupies a vintage redbrick building with tall windows, decorative ironwork, and a fantastic old neon sign - it feels a bit like something out of the New Orleans French Quarter. Although by no means strictly a gay bar, the charming and friendly Cabaret is very much a fixture in Pensacola's GLBT community, drawing a mixed bunch each evening for happy hour, karaoke, videos, comedy shows, live music, and all-around hobnobbing and socializing. For more than 75 years, the very convivial White Horse Inn bar has served the gay and lesbian community of the Bay Area, catering to college students from nearby U Cal Berkeley, visiting queers from across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, and regular Janes and Joes in the grittier city of Oakland. The still-festive bar is in Oakland, right by the Berkeley border. These days it keeps busy by holding a variety of cool theme nights. It also has a delightful patio area, perfect on a warm evening. An attractive, well-designed, and clean private gay men's club in Tampa's most historic neighborhood, Ybor Resort and Spa (1512 E. 8th Ave., 813-242-0900) is one of Florida's premier gay saunas and bathhouses, and following the closing of Club Tampa Baths, it's the only such facility in the Tampa Bay-St. Petersburg region. But beyond being a traditional - although unusually nice - bathhouse, Ybor Resort is also a gay hotel with very nice overnight accommodations and reasonable rates. . Page 62.
Tiny, offbeat, and easily missed if you just happen by its nondescript exterior, Cafe Delux has become a stalwart of the South End dining scene, to the point of having a cult following. This is bad news if you show up on a busy evening (Delux doesn't take reservations), because the entire dining room is about the size of a Hummer. Hipsters, both gay and straight, descend on this kitschy little spot for its reliably inventive comfort food, buzzing bar scene, and late hours (it's open till 1 am). Page 14.

Austin's gay bathhouse, the Midtowne Spa, is located a 15-minute drive north of downtown, near Highland shopping mall and just north of the Hyde Park neighborhood. The sizable facility that's part of one of the nation's largest gay-bathhouse chains (with branches in Dallas, Denver, Hollywood, Houston, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Wilmington, CT) is pretty popular and draws a pretty good mix of ages and types, including some students from nearby University of Texas. Following the tragic arson of Aquarius Baths, the Winnipeg gay sauna that was set fire to in 2009, resulting in the deaths of two patrons, the city has just one gay sauna, Adonis, which is in the city's North End (about a 10-minute drive or cab ride from downtown, which is home to the city's three gay bars). Adonis is a nicely equipped, clean, and friendly gay bathhouse - it's open 24 hours, has a steam room and dry sauna, a hot tub that can hold 10 men, and a safe and well-lighted location. Page 24.
Rather impressively, F Street Adult Video & Gifts has been a fixture among fans of porn, sex toys, lube, and racy adult treasures since the mid-'70s. The regional chain has eight locales, and the one pictured here, on University Avenue in the western edge of North Park (very close to Hillcrest) tends to draw the highest percentage of GLBT customers. The selection of gay videos and mags is actually marginal - it's more hetero. But this is still a reliable place to stock up on lube, toys, condoms. Page 34.

It's one of the more prominent buildings in downtown Guerneville, the heart of the Russian River's gay resort scene: the old River Theatre building has had many incarnations, and has sat dormant in recent years as often as not, although it was a popular gay nightclub called Ziggurat through much of the '90s. Most recently, it's become the area's premier live-music club and dance bar, Jerry's Knight Club - not gay-specific, but it does draw many of Guerneville's local GLBT folks. Page 6.
