Although Miami Beach has been home for some time to an increasingly popular Pride event geared toward African-Americans and Latinos in the GLBT community (Miami Beach Bruthaz, held in July), the city hadn't had an across-the-community, full-scale, city-supported Gay Pride Festival before 2009. Now, in mid-April each year, the city celebrates the Miami Beach Gay Pride Festival - this year Miami Pride takes place over the weekend of April 12 to 14, 2013. The big day (of the parade and festival) is Sunday, April 14, and typically draws more than 40,000 participants and observers - it's set along the city's fabled Ocean Drive and features a slew of high-profile performers.
A handful of events related to the Gay Pride Festival take place throughout the city during the days leading up to Pride, at a variety of venues - here's a schedule of activities, including a Rainbow Raising Ceremony at Miami Beach City Hall on April 8; a MOVA Block Party on Friday, April 12 that lasts into the wee hours; the Miami Beach Gay Pride SENSE Party on Friday, April 12; a Gay Pride Beach Party at Lummus Park on Saturday, April 13, from 1 until 9 pm; the URGE Pride Party on Saturday night, April 14; and more.
There are also some key events of interest to the gay community held later in April, following Pride, including film screenings at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (this takes place just after Pride, from April 26 to May 5, 2013) and benefit parties for AIDS Walk Miami 2013, which occurs April 28, 2013.
On Sunday, April 14, the key day of Miami Beach Gay Pride, activities commence at noon with the 5th Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, which will have numerous floats and run along Ocean Drive from 7th to 15th streets.
From noon until 6 pm on that same day, there will be a Pride Festival and Expo held at
Lummus Park, at Ocean Drive between 12th and 14th streets. GLBT-friendly businesses, organizations, and social groups will have exhibits at the expo. At entertainment is provided on a Main Stage, Latin Stage, and then lasting until 9 pm, a Gay Pride Concert. This is all followed Sunday evening with a Pride Official Closing Party, called PLAY, which runs from 10 pm until 5 am.
Following Pride Weekend, is a four-day Miami Beach Gay Pride Cruise aboard the Norwegian Sky - the four-night/five-day journey calls on the Bahamas ports of Grand Bahama Island, Nassau, and Great Stirrup Cay - the dates are April 15 through April 19, 2013.
Keep in mind that numerous gay bars as well as gay-popular restaurants, hotels, and shops have special events and parties throughout Miami Gay Pride weekend.
