Christchurch, with a population of about 400,000 (the same as Wellington and about a third as many inhabitants as Auckland), is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and that part of the country's center of gay and lesbian culture. Typically, Christchurch Pride Week comprises seven days' worth of parties and events, including art exhibits, lectures, gay bingo, "rough trade" bears party, sleaze party, Women's Star Show Party, fantasy ball, Queer Fair, and Pride Walk.
