Christchurch Gay Pride 2012 - Christchurch Pride Week 2012

Celebrating gay pride on New Zealand's South Island

By , About.com Guide

Christchurch, with a population of about 400,000 (the same as Wellington and about a third as many inhabitants as Auckland), is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and that part of the country's center of gay and lesbian culture. The picturesque "Garden City" hugs the island's east coast, just north of the Banks Peninsula - it's a green, leafy city with a temperature climate, beautiful parks, and a growing arts and cultural scene. Likewise, Christchurch Gay Pride is a growing event. Normally, it spans full week in mid-May, but the event was postponed in 2011, understandable given the damage the city has sustained following major earthquakes. News about the return of Christchurch Gay Pride as information becomes available.

Typically, Christchurch Pride Week comprises seven days' worth of parties and events, including art exhibits, lectures, gay bingo, "rough trade" bears party, sleaze party, Women's Star Show Party, fantasy ball, Queer Fair, and Pride Walk.

Additionally, numerous bars as well as gay-popular restaurants, hotels, and shops have special events and parties throughout Pride Weekend.
