Part of what turned the tiny Maine coastal village of Ogunquit into a significant gay destination was the development of the community's theater scene, which has been blossoming steadily ever since the Ogunquit Playhouse opened in 1933. Since that time, such acting legends as Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead, and Rita Hayworth. There are several productions each summer, typically musicals. Recent offerings have included The Full Monty with Sally Struthers, La Cage aux Folles with Maxwell Caulfield, Crazy For You with Rue McClanahan, and Menopause The Musical.
