Along a stretch of Tremont Street that's long been known for its selection of sophisticated, gay-friendly restaurants, Aquitaine (617-424-8577) turns out some of the best French bistro fare in Boston. The cosmopolitan, upscale restaurant at the corner of Tremont and Union Park earns raves for its romantic vibe and superb food. You might start with the house-smoked trout and haricots verts salad with rhubarb, citrus, and Creme fraiche, before moving on to lemon sole meuniere with pommes puree, slivered snap peas, and tomato concasse. The brioche French toast with caramelized pear compote, applewood-smoked bacon, and maple syrup is a star at brunch. This is an appealing "gay date" option for dinner, and it's also become especially well-regarded for its fine Sunday brunches. Aquitaine is near such popular Tremont Street eateries as Garden of Eden and Hamersley's Bistro, and it's part of the Aquitaine Restaurant Group, which also includes Metropolis Cafe (nearly across the street), and the trendy Union Bar and Grille.
