Gay nightlife in Hawaii tends to center on Honolulu, but there is one other full-time gay bar beyond Oahu, and that's the friendly and low-keyed Mask (as in Mask-querade) (75-5660 Kopiko St., Ste. C5, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 808-329-8558) in the small but bustling city of Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island. Set toward the back of a fairly ordinary-looking shopping center in the middle of town, Mask is a welcoming spot that draws a mix of locals and tourists, gay men and lesbians. Don't come expecting the cruise-y scene of your life - it's decidedly mellow here. Occasional drag shows and live entertainment liven things up, but mostly this is a spot for GLBT locals to gather and socialize.
