Although it's one of New England's largest cities, the central Massachusetts city of Worcester has never been a major GLBT destination. It is home to three gay clubs, however, including the very popular Blu Ultralounge and Nightclub (105 Water St., 508-756-2227), which is conveniently located just off I-290 (Exit 13) in a section of town that's gradually gentrifying. The attractive club is well-regarded for its theme events, from foam parties to Latin nights to karaoke Thursdays. It's worth checking this one out if you're in the area.

Another hot spot with the gay community is ENVY Nightclub (63 Jackson St., the entrance is behind the building, 508-263-0279), which has well-attended drag shows, and a particular noteworthy Saturday-night party called Revelation.

The other gay bar worth checking out in Worcester is MB Lounge (aka "the Male Box") (40 Grafton St., 508-799-4521), the longest-running gay hangout in the city. Home base to an eclectic bunch, from bears to college students to leather dudes, this friendly neighborhood bar mostly draws an over-30s crowd, though again with plenty of exceptions. It's a fun spot to watch videos and sports on TV, and on Sundays there's singing along to show tunes on the piano.

Lastly, don't overlook the handsome and quite sophisticated restaurant 86 Winter (86 Water St., 508-459-5400), which is steps from Blu Ultralounge and has a strong following with the gay and lesbian community. It's a very nice spot for attractively presented American bistro fare, with an emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients.
