Named for 4th U.S. President James Madison, Madison Square (Bull and Charlton Sts.) is among the most popular of Savannah's 22 (out of the original 24) city squares, thanks to the several notable buildings around it (especially the ornate Green-Meldrim House, the elegant Gryphon Tea Room, St. John's Episcopal Church), the impressive statue of William Jasper (fallen hero of the Revolutionary War's Seige of Savannah), and the cannon (pictured on right side of this photo) that appears pointed at the Savannah Armory building (from which it came). Also note that contained on the ground level of the Armory building is Shop SCAD (doorway is under the Exhibit A sign), the highly recommended gallery and gift shop containing works by students from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design).
