In a city where the cultural scene is focused squarely on the performing and musical arts, it's worth noting that downtown Nashville has a superb visual arts venue, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway, 615-244-3340), which opened in 2001 inside the city's stunning downtown post office building. This beautifully restored art deco building, built in 1934, is itself a work of art. The Frist hosts more than a dozen major traveling art shows and exhibitions throughout the year. The Frist is across the street from another downtown landmark, the Union Station Hotel, and just up the street from the honky tonk music clubs and rollicking restaurants of downtown's Broadway area.
