There are likely no communities in the world with a higher percentage of gay residents than Cherry Grove and Pines, the two neighboring summer resort communities on Fire Island, a barrier island about 50 miles east-southeast of New York City. From May through October, this narrow, shrub-shrouded island buzzes with activity, as thousands of gay and lesbian visitors descend for beach vacations lasting anywhere from a weekend to the entire summer.
