In Thailand's largest city, Bangkok, the annual Thai New Year's celebration, the Songkran Festival, has taken on particular meaning in recent years for GLBT residents and visitors. This mid-April weekend is also the Songkran Bangkok Gay Circuit Party, billed the largest-such gay celebration in Asia. The dates of the three-day weekend of parties is April 11 through April 13, 2014.
Produced by GCircuit, Songkran consists of three days of parties, starting on Friday, April 11, with Fairy Tale (with DJ Joe Gauthreaux and George Leong) the opening party. Then there's the main event, on Saturday, Cybertron (hosted by DJ Paulo and DJ Head) and Sunday's closing party, Amazonia (with music provided by DJ Tony Moran and Louis T).
There are also two big pool parties: the Big Splash Bear Pool Party on Saturday from 2 pm until 8 pm, and the Splash Pool Party on Sunday during these same hours. Tickets to all events are available here online.
The parties take place the first two days at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World; then on Sunday, the Bear and Boys pool parties are at the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel, followed by the evening's closing party. Here's a map showing where the key venues are located.
The Centara Grand at CentralWorld is the official host hotel, offering some great rates during Songkran. Other recommended hotels during this weekend include the Siam Kempinski Hotel, St. Regis Bangkok, the Sukhothai Bangkok, the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong, the Sofitel So, the Hotel Muse, and several others - you'll find a full list at the Songkran official "host hotels" lodging page.
