Miami, Pensacola, and Washington DC have Big GLBT Events Planned for Memorial Day Weekend

Tuesday May 12, 2009
June may very well be the busiest season for Gay Pride events, but late May's Memorial Day Weekend also offers both revelers and Pride celebrants plenty of opportunities to cut loose. It's an especially busy time for GLBT persons of color, as two big events with strong African-American followings take place in Miami and Washington, DC, respectively.

The Miami event is really two multiday circuit parties in one - Sizzle Miami (May 21-25) for black men, and Sizzle Her (May 22-25) for black women. These concurrent GLBT-party events take place in downtown Miami and include an array of concerts, parties, beach excursions, and booze cruises. Here's a quick cheat sheet on what you can expect for this weekend.

At the other end of the state, in the socially conservative city of Pensacola, Johnny Chisholm & Emerald City present a fantastic five-day Pride-meets-Partying GLBT celebration. More than 50,000 revelers turn out for this five-day event, held from May 21 through May 25. Here's a look at what you can expect at Pensacola Memorial Day Weekend.

Finally, in the nation's capital, thousands of participants descend on Washington for DC Black Pride. This is actually a weeklong celebration (beginning May 17), although the main festivities take place over the weekend of May 22 through May 24. There's a film festival, several big parties, a poety slam, a fashion show, and numerous workshops at DC Black Pride, which welcomes both lesbians and gay men. Here's a preview of DC Black Pride.
