Lady Chablis to Perform in Savannah Over St. Patrick's Day Weekend

Friday March 2, 2007
Savannah has quietly emerged as a romantic and festive gay getaway in recent years, photo by Andrew CollinsDidn't get a chance to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year? Well, there's still time to plan a last-minute trip to attend Savannah's much-heralded St. Patrick's Day celebrations, which last through the weekend of March 16-18. More than 250,000 visitors pack this romantic, historic city for the largest St. Patrick's party in the world. Historic fountains gurgle green water, and just about everybody in town dresses in green for the variety of parties and activities, including a parade. Plenty of gay visitors participate, if unofficially, in this celebration, and on Friday and Saturday nights this year, Lady Chablis will be performing her inimitable drag show at Club One. Ms. Chablis and Club One earned considerable notoriety in John Berendt's bestselling chronicle of quirky Savannah characters, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a book that has helped increase the city's cachet with gay travelers over the years.

Here's my guide to visiting Gay Savannah.

Also, About.com's guide to the Southeastern United States for Visitors, Sheridan Alexander, has created a number of useful articles on visiting the city, including a story on St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Savannah.
