Clubbing in the Castro...and Elsewhere in San Francisco

Tuesday February 27, 2007
One of San Francisco's most eclectic, inviting gay hangouts, the Bar on Castro draws a cool crowd every night of the week, photo by Andrew CollinsIs it possible for a city to have too many gay nightlife options? San Francisco may just have this "problem," which plenty of cities would enjoy having. There are lots and lots of places to dance, including clubs that have been serving the community since LBJ was in office to roving once-a-week parties that come and go faster than you can say Condoleezza Rice.

I'm always a little reluctant to attempt recommending San Francisco's best gay bars, because there are so many. But I've decided to present a list of the city's Top 10 Gay Bars and Clubs, with the caveat that there are plenty of other wonderful spots for socializing, cruising, sipping cocktails, dancing, and such. This round-up at least gives an idea of some of the city's tried-and-true gay faves. There's a little something here for every taste, from gruff leather bars to campy Latino drag discos to convivial neighborhood dyke bars. So have fun, explore, and prepare for a long night of dancing, if that's your thing, because some of San Francisco's top clubs keep going into the wee hours on weekends. Oh, and one final bit of advice - one "venue" I didn't list is Gus Presents, which is actually a gay-party-producer that hosts highly popular gay parties at several venues around town. It's best to check the Gus Presents website for the latest goings-on. Also, remember that although the majority of the city's gay bars are in the Castro, don't overlook the many other neighborhoods around town with gay nightlife, notably the Mission Mission and SoMa.

Be sure also to view my handy guide on what's where in gay San Francisco.

If you're headed to Phoenix, be sure to check out my Top 10 list of that city's best gay bars.
